A peak into my design process.
As I continue my state ABC journey, I’ve developed a rhythm where I round the 26 letters of the alphabet with 4 blocks of the state flower to get to the 30 blocks that comprise the fabric panel set. I added California to my ABC body of work this summer which gave me an excellent opportunity to illustrate my one my favorite flowers: the California poppy.
I found a sketch of some poppies in an old sketchbook.
I recreated the sketch and in my graphics design software and chose some patterns to fill: a green for the stems and leaning heavily on orange patterns for the petals:

From left to right: “Sandia Plaid”, “California Poppies”, “Calendula” and “Green Chile”
Notice the pattern called “California Poppies” already existed in my collection. Once things are sent to the fabric printer, it’s tricky to change names. So, this new pattern is going to have to be called “Orange Poppies”.
The digital illustration, filled with my patterns, looks like this:
Then, with my normal amount of grouping and layering, the final repeating pattern, “Orange Poppies”, looks like this:
With so much juicy orange, it has quickly become a customer favorite!
