Large version (“Good Fences/30 Acres”) uses 30 7″x7″ illustrations such as “New Mexico ABC’s”. Project size is 63″ x 74″ (more or less depending on sashing).
Materials for “Good Fences, 30 acres”
- 30 7”x7” illustrated panels
- 4 Coordinates: (Note: for cut instruction “WOF” = width of fabric, these instructions assume 42”)
Fabric A: Framing the illustrations. 1 yard. Cut 24 strips, 1.5″ wide X WOF.
Fabric B: Red squares. 1/4 yard. Cut strips 3.5″ wide X WOF. Then cut into 20 3.5″x3.5″ squares.
Fabric C: Light fence rails. 1/2 yard. Cut 9 strips 1.5 wide x WOF.
Fabric D: Background and border. 1 3/4-2 yards. (Get 2 – 2 1/2 yards if you are concerned about pattern directionality and pattern matching on your cuts). Cut 5 strips @ 1.5” x WOF. Cut 9 strips @ 3.5” x WOF. Cut 4 strips @ 4″ x WOF for sashing.
Alternative: “Good Fences, 12 Acres”
Smaller version using 12 7″x7″ illustrations. Project size is 48″ x 55″ (more or less depending on sashing).
- 12 7”x7” illustrated panels
- 4 Coordinates: (Note: for cut instruction “WOF” = width of fabric, these instructions assume 42”)
Fabric A: Framing the illustrations. 1/2 yard. Cut 10 strips, 1.5″ wide X WOF.
Fabric B: Red squares. 1/8 yard. Cut 1 strip 3.5″ wide X WOF. Then cut into 8 3.5″x3.5″ squares.
Fabric C: Light fence rails. 1/4 yard. Cut 5 strips 1.5 wide x WOF.
Fabric D: Background and border. 1 1/2 yards. (Get more if you are concerned about pattern directionality and pattern matching on your cuts). Cut 2 strips @ 1.5” x WOF, cut 3 strips@ 3.5″ X WOF. Remainder is sashing.
Assembly Instructions
1. Frame the Illustrated Panels
Join fabric A strips (1.5” x WOF ) end to end. Press joins then cut the strip into 60 strips 7” long and 60 strips 9” long.
Attach a 7” strip to the left and right sides of each of the 30 illustrated panels.
Attach a 9” strip to the top and bottom of each of the illustrated panels.
Press seams. You now have 30 framed panels, each is 9” x 9”. Lay them out in 6 rows of 5 then stack them in order. For the remainder of each assembly, you will need to know which panel is the last in each row and which 5 panels comprise the last row.
2. Create the Fence Rail “Sandwiches”
Join the 1.5” x WOF strips of fabric C (light rails) to create one long strip.
Join the 1.5” x WOF strips of fabric D (background) to create one long strip. (Note, this strip will be about 1/2 as long as the fabric C strip).
Press the join seams. Cut the fabric C strip in half.
Create a strip “sandwich” with a fabric C strip + fabric D strip + fabric C strip.
Press the seams then cut the “sandwich” strip into 49 pieces, 3.5” long.
3. Prep for Assembling Blocks
Cut the 3.5” x WOF strips of fabric D (background) into 98 3.5” x 3.25” pieces.
Hints: if you are worried about fabric directionality, you might find it easier to cut 3.5” x 3.5” squares, place them in the appropriate orientation when creating the subassemblies, then trim 1/4” off each subassembly. You will be less inclined to make mistakes this way!
4. Assemble Left-most Block of Row 1
Create 2 sub-assemblies of fabric D square + rail “sandwich” + fabric D square. (If you cut 3.5” x 3.5” squares, above, here is where you would trim 1/4” off each side.). You now have 2 sub-assemblies that look like this:
Attach one of these subassemblies to the right side of your block like this:
Add a 3.5” x 3.5” square of fabric B to the right side of the 2nd subassembly. This sub-assembly will look like this:
Add this subassembly to the bottom of your block. The resulting block should look like this: (It will measure 12” wide by 12 3/4” tall.)
5. Assemble the Next 3 Blocks in the Row
Repeat Step 4 for the next 3 blocks in the row. The last block (rightmost) is different because it won’t have the side sub-assembly or accent square.
6. Assemble the Last (Right-Most) Block in the Row
For the last (right-most) block in the row, create only one rail sub-assembly that looks like the first image in Step 4. Add it to the bottom of your right-most framed panel.
7. Assemble the Row
Attach the 5 blocks you have just assembled to create one row of 5 blocks.
8. Assemble the Next 4 Rows
(The last row is different – it does not have a bottom subassembly)
Repeat steps 4-7 for each row of 5 panels.
9. Assemble the Last Row
The last row does not have the bottom sub-assembly. Repeat steps 4-7 except create only 1 of the rail sub-assembly (first image in step 4) and attach it to the sides of all but the rightmost block. As with the other rows, the rightmost block will not have a side sub-assembly.
10. Final Assembly of the Quilt Top
Stitch the 5 rows together.
Join 4” wide strips of fabric D for one long sashing strip. Cut this strip into 2 pieces that are the width of your quilt top. Join these two strips to the quilt as top and bottom. Then cut the vertical strips and add left and right side sashing.
